Footnotes for Joan Miró

* So many stars, señor –

punched eyes, one-letter expletives,

the cartoon birds of love?

* You mark sky places

with bold wings

to plot a migration of the heart.

* Taking the negative

of night you make

asterisks of constellations.

* Exuberant dark

inspires primary school colour

in your explanations.

* Two crescent moons

converge in your tricorn.

Eyes sit like owls below.

* As lines lean,

arteries tighten, a tide

becomes trickles in sand.

* The fasces of stick men

are made a pyre.

Black fireworks blot the stars.
